All you need is a whisk. This batch was pretty well-behaved, and only slightly thick when it went into the mould. I used the whisk to make the little star effects on top. This works with soap that is the consistency of warm custard.

When your soap is misbehaving badly, you can still get a beautiful effect with a whisk. This soap is almost completely seized, and I’ve used the whisk with a little more force to get the wavy patterns on the top. Simply push the whisk through the soap to the bottom of the mould and then pull it back up and out to create this pretty soap topping.

And here is a pretty topping to try with soap poured at very thin trace. This effect is very easy to get. Use your spoon to layer circles of coloured soap on top of your soap log. Then use the chopstick to ‘pull’ them into hearts. To do this, insert the chopstick into the soap about one inch deep, and about a half an inch above the circle of coloured soap. Now bring the chopstick through the circle in a straight line to create the heart. It takes a tiny amount of practice, but it’s incredibly easy to do.

With your soap at medium trace, dip the spatula into the soap about 3mm and gently remove it to create the lines.
